It is useful when you are working on image correction where you went further ahead than the application allows you to go back to the initial state. Simply, select the history brush tool with the blend mode normal and paint on your document and it will take you back to the initial state of the image through relatively easier route.
The options includes for history brush tool in the options bar are brush tip preset, brush panel, belnding mode, opacity, flow, airbrush and pressure controls.
Art History Brush Tool
Art history brush tool is another brush tool that cancels all the changes made to the image and takes it back to the initial state. The only difference from history brush tool is it adds the hand paint effect to the image instead of keeping the originality.

Apart from the regular brush tool options, the art history brush tool provides you with three more options which are stated below.
Style
The style option allows you to define the brush tip for art history. The options on the dropdown includes variants of tight and loose, short and long as well as curls and waves for brush strokes. For timy details, tight and short option works well while larger details can be painted using loose and long.
Area
This option defines the diameter each brush stroke should cover. Lesser value produces more accurate output.
Tolerance
The tolerance option here allows you to define the amount of color pixels you don't want to be affected with the art brush. Keeping it at 0 will make the brush replace all the contents with the artwork.
